Sliding Door Installation

Closet sliding door installation in Long Island City, New York — this project centered on transforming a bare, storage-less bedroom in a modern high-rise unit at 27-20 42nd Road into a fully functional wardrobe space. Before work began, the room was an empty shell: dark hardwood floors, clean white walls, and a wide window wall with a roller shade, but no closet whatsoever. The client had already sourced the hardware — an IKEA SKYTTA sliding door system paired with SVARTISDAL white paper panels — and the scope called for Ovation to assemble and install the full configuration, which spans roughly 138 inches wide by 80 inches tall across three sliding panels.

The installation required careful floor and ceiling anchoring to ensure the heavy aluminum track sat level across the entire run, a detail that matters especially in a Long Island City high-rise where floors can carry subtle variation from unit to unit. The door panels themselves combine frosted white upper sections with dark espresso-toned lower panels, a two-tone composition that echoes the room's existing contrast between the light ceiling and the deep walnut-stained hardwood below. Above the main sliding track, fixed white panels fill the gap to the ceiling, giving the installation a fully built-in, wall-to-wall appearance rather than the freestanding look a standard off-the-shelf setup would produce.

Fitting a prefabricated sliding system to exact room dimensions without custom millwork requires precise shimming, plumb tracking, and tight scribing against the ceiling plane — work that reads as simple in the finished photos but demands close attention during execution. The recessed lighting overhead, already in place in the unit, now washes cleanly down the face of the panels, reinforcing the finished quality of the installation. What had been a completely open, storage-free bedroom in this Long Island City apartment is now anchored by a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe wall that reads as intentional architecture rather than an afterthought.
