In Jackson Heights, NY, sisal-wrapped scratching posts, wall-mounted perches, and an angled sisal-wrapped climbing pole leading to a vertical scratching post already framed an arched opening around a column in this home. What was missing was the connecting bridge system that would link one side of the opening to the other. Working from fabrication drawings, we built the bridge as a single shaped board with angled miter cuts on each end to navigate the column's geometry. We added a launch platform shelf about 10 inches deep on one side, and cut a half-circle notch into the landing platform so it would fit around the sisal-wrapped pole, which runs 10 to 12 inches in diameter. We mounted the assembly on white brackets alongside the existing hardware to hold it flush against the wall. The finished bridge sits over the arched opening in Jackson Heights, seated flush between the launch and landing platforms, with wood tones that complement the existing sisal wrapping and oak perches. The cats now have a continuous path from the launch shelf across the bridge to the landing notch, around the column.
