What drywall repair actually involves
A patch starts with cutting back to sound material and backing it so the new board or plaster has something to grip. From there it's boarded, taped, and coated, then sanded to a Level 4 paint-ready finish. Most patches take three coats of compound with drying time between each, though a small, shallow patch sometimes needs less buildup.
If the damage is from a water leak, the leak needs to be fixed before we patch — repairing drywall over an active leak just means doing it again later. Once the source is dry, we cut out the damaged section and rebuild it.
New drywall installation — hanging, taping, and mudding to that same Level 4 finish — is the right call when a wall or ceiling section is beyond patching.
What we find in Bronx buildings
The Bronx has a large stock of pre-war apartment buildings. Plaster walls and ceilings are common in these older buildings, alongside newer drywall construction in more recently built sections. Attached and semi-detached multi-family houses are also common in many Bronx neighborhoods.
Plaster and drywall behave differently under a patch — plaster needs a keyed backing and takes coats more slowly, while drywall seams tape and mud in a more predictable way. Knowing which one is behind a wall or ceiling changes how we approach the repair before we mix any compound.
In occupied apartment buildings, we plan around elevator or stairwell access and protect hallways and common areas along with the unit itself, not just the room we're working in.
How we price it
Drywall repair starts at $375 for the first wall patch, with each additional patch at $125. Ceiling patches are priced at twice the wall price. These are per-patch prices, not per room or per visit.
New drywall installation is priced at $2.50 per square foot of wall surface, with ceilings at twice the wall rate. A full standard room, about 16 sheets of board, is $1,600.
Unit rates for painting and drywall are published on our site. Anything outside those categories — skim coating, demo, or type-X board for a garage or basement — is quoted after we see the job, at the free on-site estimate.
What's included, and what's quoted separately
We supply all materials — board, tape, compound, primer, and hardware — and they show up as their own lines on the quote, not folded into a flat number. You approve the paint color and sheen before we start.
Prep and cleanup are part of every job: protecting floors and furniture, containing dust, and leaving the space clean when we're done. Skim coating a full wall, demo of existing material, and type-X board for garages or basements are quoted as their own separate lines.
Timing and living through the work
Most patches take two to three visits, spaced out so each coat of compound has time to dry before the next goes on. Rushing a coat is what leaves a patch you can see once it is painted.
If your building asks for a certificate of insurance before work starts, we send ours ahead of the visit.
Who you are hiring
Ovation Contractors is insured and holds Westchester County Home Improvement Contractor license WC-40688-H26; we are based in Mount Vernon, ten minutes from the Bronx line. Every quote is a line-item proposal, so you see the patch price, the materials and the paint line separately rather than one bundled number.
The one-year workmanship warranty covers the repair itself. The on-site estimate is free and carries no obligation, and new requests get a reply within 30 minutes.

Drywall Repair in Bronx: questions we get
Do you match the existing texture and finish?
We build patches to a smooth Level 4 finish, which blends well with most walls. Some ceilings and older plaster have a texture or pattern that a small patch can't fully replicate, and in those cases we'll tell you before the work starts whether skim coating the whole surface, quoted as its own line, gives a better match.
Is painting included in the repair price?
No. Repainting the repaired area is always quoted as its own separate line. Matching existing paint on a patch has limits — paint fades and ages differently across a wall, so for the most even result we often recommend painting the full wall rather than just the patched section.
How long does a patch take?
Most patches run two to three visits, spaced out so each coat of compound dries before the next goes on.
What counts as a separate patch versus one job?
Pricing is per patch — the first wall patch is $375 and each additional patch is $125, with ceiling patches at twice the wall price.
Do you supply the materials?
Yes. Board, tape, compound, primer, and hardware are all supplied by us and appear as their own lines on your quote, and you choose the paint color and sheen.
What if the damage is from a leak?
The leak needs to be fixed before we repair the drywall — patching over an active leak means doing the work twice. Once the source is dry, we cut out the damaged section and rebuild it.
